Anyone Stop Lupron Or Any Other Hormone Blocker Before Treatment Period Complete?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Posting for my significant other who is not on here…yet. She was diagnosed Oct 2021 with stage 2 breast cancer in RT breast. She chose to undergo a double mastectomy and forgo radiation. She is on Lupron injections every 3 months and Femara (letrozole) every day to induce menopause (she is 48). Unfortunately the side effects have been significant in her mind; weight gain of 30lbs (normally 120lbs of solid muscle), mood swings, hot flashes and most recently (3 days ago) 10 cavities in 6 months… read more

Hi Greg, I'm guessing you are Ginger's SO, Welcome back! Along the top of the webpage is a tab for Resources, which has assorted articles, written in a patient-friendly way. Honestly, that is one of the hardest parts of doing your own research as a patient, is coming across scholarly articles that leave you feel more hopeless than hopeful. So, thank you on her behalf, for being available as that filter.

I did a quick look and found this one- perhaps a good jumping off point:

Hope you and the family have a wonderful weekend! Hugs to all!

Sorry your s/o is having a hard time! I am not only a breast cancer survivor, but I work as a nurse in a breast cancer clinic, so my view is skewed.
I have never heard of dental issues with Lupron or an AI. Bone weakness is possible side effect. Before I started chemo, I saw my dentist. He said a dry mouth can hugely contribute to cavities. I used ACT lozenges for dry mouth. It is interesting that her mouth changed after treatment. Everyone is different, and I think all can react differently.
As far as stopping treatment, that is a personal decision. I do think knowledge is key. If it was me, I would ask my oncologist the risk of recurrence with and without treatment, including becoming stage IV. Recurrence is one (awful) thing, but returning as metastatic is life changing. The goal is no longer curative. Because she is on Lupron and an AI, I am guessing she is hormone positive (ER or PR). I don’t know the statistics, but that type has a higher risk of recurrence.
Also, a second opinion is always an option.
I am in no way trying to influence anyone’s decision. I am the type of nurse that truly care about my patients, and when things don’t go well for them, I take that hard.
Wishing both of you well!

@Greg, I should have also mentioned that at the bottom of the above linked article is a References tab, that will link you to the articles (scholarly mags, etc) used in compiling the info presented.

Coincidence? There is another 'sister' who just posted about excelerated tooth decay during treatment. Not all side effects from chemo, AI's, radiation are cast in stone. I do believe there is some correlation between tooth decay and these 'heir apparent' side effects....dry mouth, overactive salivary glands, etc can reek havoc on your teeth and cause decay. All the more reason to step up oral health care during treatment.

As for risk reduction relative to treatment vs opting out, I can't speak to that but there are others on this site who can address that.
