Oopherectomy V. Arimidex

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

The plan is for oopherectomy, then Arimidex (BRCA2; this is my second cancer- was on Tamoxifen for 6 years until this came along). If I can’t tolerate Arimidex, will the oopherectomy be enough to handle the ER+ ?

Aromatase Inhibitors were created for post menopausal women. Your body still creates estrogen using aromatase cells after menopause ( oopherectomy). So the inhibitors will prevent the estrogen that was created from sources other than your ovaries.

While your ovaries are your primary source of estrogen, it is also produced in belly fat, adrenal glands and elsewhere in your body. That is why they put you on Aromatase inhibitors after menopause.

If you want your ovaries removed because of the Estrogen, just remember both the adrenals and the pituitary gland also make estrogen, so that doesn’t omit blockers.

Hard to say. I had the oopherectomy 16 mos ago and yet my estrogen level remains the same. I would assume they would still have you on some type of a aromtase inhibitor.

Interesting. My Oncologist keeps insisting on ovary removal before she can put me on any hormonal treatment - and I’m not sure if it’s because she’s a rather aggressive proponent of just excising body parts or what the real benefit would be for someone in my situation. It could be that she just wants to ensure that I am in menopause - because prior to this chemo, I wasn’t.
