I'm having BMX and trying to decide if I should have expanders put in with the BMX or go flat so I can decide later what I want to do. Not a candidate for tissue recon b/c I'm too thin but not sure if I want to risk infection and complications to BMX healing, right now I just the cancer out and healed. Surgeon said if I dont do expanders with BMX, and do need radiation, then I might not be able to get recon with implants later b/c the skin wont stretch after rad. I was not a candidate for tissue reconstruction. My left breast was a mess. I chose bilateral mastectomy with no reconstruction. I’m 61 years old post menopause. I will use a prosthetic. I know too many women who have had issues with infection after implants. I didn’t want anything in my body.
I had my surgery eight weeks ago. I’ve had no complications. No radiation or chemotherapy needed. I am on Anastrozole for five years. I’m very happy with my choice. I did lots of research prior to surgery.
It’s such a personal decision. I’m sure you will make the one that’s best for you 💗

When considering breast reconstruction after radiation therapy, it's generally recommended to delay reconstruction. Here are some key points from the knowledge base:

- Delayed Reconstruction: This can occur weeks, months, or even years after the initial breast cancer surgery. It allows time for the body to heal and for any adjuvant treatments (like radiation) to be completed.
- Radiation Therapy Impact: Radiation can interfere with the healing process and lead to changes in the breast's appearance and color. It can also cause additional scarring if done after reconstructive surgery.
- Consultation: It's important to discuss with your surgeon the benefits and risks of each type of reconstruction, and develop a plan that considers your specific situation.

Always consult with your oncologist and surgeon to determine the best timing and type of reconstruction for your individual case.
