Single Mastectomy Or Double, Which Is Better?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Darlington, SC

My surgeon only recommends a single. I want to be done with cancer and this is making me nervous.

@A MyBCTeam Member: only you can make this decision, lovely one! I will say though that having cancer in one does not necessarily mean you will ultimately get it in the other - there are many factors that determine if the risk is higher or not, such as genetics, whether you're triple negative, Her2+ etc.
I had a single mastectomy 5 years ago at 39. I live a happy, healthy unicorn life now. My surgery was quick and relatively easy (I was back home within 5 hours in minimal discomfort, and I slept fine in my own bed that night). My other breast is screened regularly - I alternate mammos with MRI's every 6 months and have physical exams twice yearly. I have no problem with bras or swimwear or clothes - I wear a weighted prosthetic when I want or go without when I want. They even make one-sided bras (see mine in the pic!). Bottom line - it's your body and your life, and you have instincts inside you for a reason. Listen to them, lovely lady 🩷

Hi Paula, Like you, I was totally clear on the one side. I went with the single mastectomy, flat closure, no reconstruction. Any time we have surgery, we are putting our body through additional trauma, etc. with risks of complications. I wanted a quick path back to my life, and the mastectomy also allowed me to skip radiation. It has been 5 years since the mastectomy, no regrets, just sorry women even have to consider these options! But until we have a preventative and cure- women will still face these decisions. My decision fits me, I was off work a total of 8 weeks (surgeon would have released sooner, but the oncologist wanted to get at least two chemos done first). I just pop in the prosthetic and go! No one would know unless I told them! Take in all the info, and then You Do You! Keeping you in prayers for peace with your decisions, and every success with your procedure! Hugs!

I’m just nervous about the cancer reoccurring. I know any surgery or procedure is not 100% guaranteed. I’m getting the single mastectomy without reconstructive surgery. That was my idea.

I had a MRI done and there’s no trace of any masses. The results are great
