Osteoporosis & Anti-Hormone Medications - Any Feedback On This?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Trenton, MI

I haven't started treatment yet as they are trying to determine if I have to have more surgery for a satellite nodule that wasn't removed during the first surgery in December 2023. From OncoScore, it was determined that I will need Radiation (both breasts) but no Chemo. I will also need to take Anti-Hormone therapy for 10 yrs. The problem is I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis a couple years ago (but not on any medication for this). They did say that the anti-hormone pills do cause bone thinning… read more

Certainly! Here is some information on osteoporosis and anti-hormone medications based on the knowledge base:

- Bone Loss: Hormone therapies, including aromatase inhibitors, can cause bone loss over time, leading to conditions like osteopenia or osteoporosis.
- Monitoring: People using aromatase inhibitors are often monitored for osteoporosis. Regular bone density tests may be necessary to watch for weakened bones.
- Medications: Some individuals may need to take additional medications to help strengthen their bones while on hormone therapy.

Managing Bone Health:
- Diet: Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to help maintain bone strength.
- Medical Advice: Always consult with your doctor about how often you should get bone density screenings and any additional treatments to support bone health.

You should have a bone scan before you start the hormone blocker. If it shows osteopenia, they will offer you a bone modifier, usually given every 6 months. Depending on your insurance, Zometa, an IV infusion or Prolia, a shot. They are very effective.

LauraAh, Thank you very much for your response. My last bone density test was in 2022 - the report says osteoporosis. (Cancer dx in late 2023) Strangely, the dr never mentioned anything about bone modifiers even though I told him I had osteoporosis. I'm learning so much from the wonderful women here! I will mention this to my new oncologist. I feel so much better about this now after reading both your and FloStein's response. Thank you so much for your help. Wishing you the best and will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

FloStein, Thank you so much for the valuable input! My oncologist (new, 2nd opinion) has not mentioned anything about a bone builder - just the anti-hormone. I will definitely ask him about this. I'm so glad that Prolia has worked for you! I never knew that this condition could be reversed. So sorry you had to go thru this twice - what a nightmare!! Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. And again, thank you so much for your help. I truly appreciate it.
