Side Effects Of Aromatase Inhibitor

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Trenton, MI

I haven't started any treatment yet, although the dr did say after radiation I will have to be on an Aromatase Inhibitor for 10 yrs. (I'm assuming a bone builder also since I have osteoporosis.) In a article I just read, it says that the AI's can cause loss of teeth due to bone loss. I'm really afraid of this side-effect
Was wondering what side effects others had (and if loss of teeth). If so, how long after starting the meds did this happen
On the other hand, I was wondering for those who… read more

I was on arimidex for 5 years side effects were minimal. Last year ( which was 3 years after stopping Arimidex at my oncologist direction) I had a lump in the other breast . It was cancer again.. This time I am on a different aromatase inhibitor.. Exemestase the side effects are MUCH worse.. The joint and MUSCLE pain is awful , nausea and fatigue are bad.

I was on Arimidex for 5 years after ductal and just radiation in 2015 with only weight gain (bone loss monitored but no change in osteopenia). Then two years after finishing (2022) diagnosed with lobular and had chemo and radiation. I’m back on Arimidex and gained back some of the weight I lost with chemo. We have discussed 10 years instead of 5. I am 74 yrs old.

Unfortunately I hv been on letrozole for nearly 7 years and it has been so hectic. Weight gain, hot flushes and sweats, arthralgia, hair loss, vagueness, memory loss, developed osteo penia. I hv been praised by my oncologist for persevering but I am tempted every day to cease.hv tried the other two but no change. I am so scared to go off it. I also would like to hear of others who hv stayed cancer free without it. Thankyou 🙂

Very similar experience! Am at the 3 month with letrozole and am persevering. Good to know some side effects (they are diminishing) will possibly leave. I choked on food often and did not realize it was a side effect ( have to be careful with peanuts and rice, etc.) The brain fog is quite concerning when you are 80 years old. I can still do puzzles, wordle, etc. but even reading wasn't the same. Thanks for your input!

Hi
If it helps I've been on Letrazole for 7 months. The first few months had brain fog, asleepless night if I had tea or coffee after 3 pm, UTI, dry mouth, a few aches and pains. My body definitely reacted but I persevered and took B complex, and the brain fog vanished (on the best version of letrazole for that.) My nails aren't great but they never were! Everything else settled down after a while but I still have a dry mouth and really need to drink more water etc than before. Also a few aches and pains but exercise helps with that. I always take letrazole on a full stomach after breakfast. as it is very quickly absorbed. Can have tea and coffee any time now. -miracle.
After this time for the peace of mind knowing that I've tried everything to stop recurrence until the vaccine comes along.
Best of luck with your AI
