I Have Had So Many Negative Side Effects From AI’s. What Are The Alternatives Once All Types Have Been Exhausted ?

Rural Washington

I was diagnosed at Stage 1 IDC, no lymph nodes impacted, but 4 were removed during a mastectomy of left breast.

I'm interested in this topic. I just stopped Tamoxifen after 5.5 miserable years of side effects. Now my oncologist wants me to take an AI for another five years. I had such a hard time with Tamoxifen that I'm just not sure I can handle another five years of an AI with a whole new host of side effects. I'm truly conflicted as to whether it is worth it at age 60 and no real way to know if my cancer could ever even come back. I wish there were more options and better statistics on this. I'm seriously considering not taking anything and just focus on healthy eating, staying active and a positive mindset.

>>Another way to decrease estrogen is to keep body fat low.

>> And another is exercise but many women are just not capable of the intense kind of exercise needed to lower the risk.

>>Or look for supplements that claim to balance or lower estrogen but do your own research.

Some researchers think that doing regular intense exercise lowers breast cancer risk by reducing estrogen levels. Since estrogen can cause breast cancer cells to develop and grow, less estrogen in the body could lower breast cancer risk

I cannot take either Anastrozole or Letrozole. I am taking examestane. That one is okay for me. It acts more like a steroid, I was reading. Instead of full stop estrogen, it works differently lowering it. I'm not as depressed or achy.

No one can make this decision except yourself after research.
60 is fairly young in that you may be around in your 80’s.
That is food for thought……

@AlitaVanDolanWhite.

I just came across a very old post on that situation where someone could not take any AI’s and switched to natural foods that lower estrogen.

You would need to research this a lot. She was taking mushroom buttons and cauliflower.
Plus, I do know that green tea lowers estrogen a bit.
But, I have no idea if this plan would offer any protection in comparison to the AI’s.

Try researching on Pub Med and get back to us with anything that you find out…
