How To Understand Recurrence? Oncotype?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Chicago, IL

I just came out of my oncologist appointment, I've been having issues with tamoxifen (rare side effects) and I am trying to decide if I want to stay on it. He told me my recurrence is roughly 20 percent (I'm not sure where that percentage is coming from) I had invasive stage 1 breast cancer, 1.8cm mass positive for IDC, ER/PR+, Her2-
I am trying to understand if 20 percent is considered a high chance and where did this percentage come from? My oncotype was 7 and so the numbers confuse me,… read more

Lisa I remember trying to figure all this out. What my oncologist told me was my onco type was 85/15 which meant I had a 15% chance of reoccurrence. I was told if I had been at 20% I would've required chemo, I had a bilateral mastectomy so no need for radiation. I was IDC, stage 2, 3+ tumors in one breast, est/pro+, her2-,node-. Not sure if this helps but that is how she explained it to me.

@A MyBCTeam Member Right!! Like it's so confusing, my oncologist told me it was to see if I needed chemo, and I didn't. And from what I understood before mine was low too, but this time he just made it sound like medium high for recurrence and that confused me more.

Hello,
This is really a confusing situation.
What I was told came from my OncoType DX report. There are 3 different numbers on the report.
My OncoType Dx Score: (Recurrence Score (RS) Result) "0"
My Distant Recurrence % Risk: 3%
Group Avg. Absolute Chemotherapy Benefit: Less than 1%
My Cancer Diagnosis: IDC, ER+, PR+, HR- with Lumpectomy and Radiation
So, I have no idea what to think @A MyBCTeam Member as we have very similar diagnosis and OncoType DX scores.

My oncologist said that I could have the test or not because my numbers were low. It’s hard to understand.

What is a good Oncotype score?
A score between 0 and 25 means you have a low risk of the cancer returning if you get hormone treatment. With this score you probably will not benefit from receiving chemotherapy. A score between 26 and 100 means you have a higher risk that the disease might come back.
