Due to joint pain, my oncologist switched me to Tamoxin which I have taken for a year. At my request, I have stopped all hormon suppression two weeks ago. Feeling much better and debating on whether to stay off as I want or go back on as my oncologist wants. Are there people out there who have stopped hormone suppression before 5 years? Did your cancer come back?

Thanks Sheri, my on oncologist is clearly following told standard treatment plan, but he asked me to promise to go back on it after I see how my body does . I have been off Tamoxifin 2 weeks, no hot flashes, more energy and lost 5 lbs.

Radiation adds 40% chance that it will not reoccur. Hormone therapy adds 2-3% according to my radiation oncologist. I had to stop due to the side effects and quality of life is important. And I was told that the doctors do not know what to do when side effects amplify already chronic conditions.

Hello! It's great to hear from you. Given your history of lumpectomies, radiation, and aromatase inhibitor therapy, here are some important points to consider:

1. Radiation Therapy Effects:
- Heart and Lung Health: Radiation can affect your heart and lungs. Be aware of symptoms like cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Regular follow-ups with your doctor are essential.
- Pneumonitis: This is a potential side effect, causing lung inflammation. Symptoms include cough and shortness of breath.

2. Aromatase Inhibitors:
- Side Effects: Common side effects include bone, joint, and muscle pain. If these become severe, discuss alternative treatments with your doctor.
- Duration: Typically taken for at least five years, but some may switch to other medications like tamoxifen.

3. General Health:
- Bone Health: Aromatase inhibitors can lead to a decline in bone density. Regular monitoring and possibly supplements or medications to strengthen bones might be necessary.

Always keep your healthcare team informed about any new symptoms or concerns. They can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
