If Given A Choice, What Type Of Surgery Did You Choose And Why?
My recent lumpectomy showed additional cancer in the breast and 1 unclear margin. I will need another surgery soon. My surgeon discussed all my options: I can have another tylectomy to look for the remaining cancer, a full mastectomy, or even a bilateral with reconstruction. I'm struggling to decide which is best for my diagnosis: ILC stage IIA, HER2+/ER+/PR+
Yep stick to your gut!! This is the time to listen to your inner voice. You can do this if you give yourself some stillness/meditation and really hear what you would be most comfortable with.
Ok here comes my left field opinion. Everyone is diff. Mine started dcis stage 1A. I immediately wanted double mastectomy. Why? Every member of my family has passed from cancer. 4 members including me and my daughter going thru cancer at that time, was done with it as it started. Surgeon oncologist fought me on this as it was end of dec and ins co hant signed plastic surgeons on. Stick to your gut. Had surgery to find out my simple dcis had popped out like popcorn and was in 3 areas now so surgery then another surgery to clean up borders, and remove 5 sentinel nodes.30 days radiation 5 which were boost. Year later 2 mris and stil get cant exclude disease. Would it have been diff if it would have been done my way. Easy some times is not easy.❤️
If it were me, I would go for bilateral mastectomy. If there were some remaining cancer cells left, who says there aren’t more that imaging can’t see. Especially if your Her2 is positive! This makes it more aggressive.
It is also known that if cancer cells get dissected during surgery, there’s a greater risk for dissemination.
I also had just one breast and no lymph nodes. But I removed both breasts without reconstruction and am very happy with this decision. Please note that this still doesn’t eliminate all risk, but it does reduce it considerably.
Let us know what you decide. 😊
Hi Jen, my team went over all options with me and I decided on bilateral mastectomy. It was missed on my mammogram for 3 years and I never wanted to go through that again. I was sure it had spread and was a nervous wreck since it had been present for so long. I was extremely fortunate to have clear lymph nodes. I do not regret my decision at all. I had tissue expanders placed and am now in the process of having them filled and will start chemo this week. Go with your gut and do what is best for you!
I have ILC as well, tumors are large, stage 2a. My oncologist and surgeon thought I should shrink them to do a lumpectomy, if possible, because they said it is a cancer that can recur and is much more difficult to detect with a mastectomy. It can metastasize to the stomach and elsewhere. They are recommending radiation after, then we'll see from there. It is a very tough decision to make. I'm praying that you get the right guidance to make the right decision for you. Keep us posted?🤗

People Keep Questioning Me For Having Reconstruction. They Keep Saying As Long As Cancer/ Breasts Are Gone Reconstruction Is Not Important.
