Stephanie, my surgeon is a breast specialist, so I will remain a patient of her practice even when the oncologist releases me. The only surgeries she does are breast surgeries. She asked if I was absolutely sure I wanted to remain flat. (Definitely!) So, she did what was called an "aesthetic flat closure"- meaning there would be no extra skin saved for later implants, etc. It healed without any issues. Originally the scar had me thinking it looked like a train track- incision scar with staple dots on both sides of it. I was kidding- telling people that I might consider tattooing the "Little Engine that Could" somewhere along the track- lol! But it has all faded great!
I did the exercises as soon as she said, and I have not had any issues with lymphedema (3 lymph nodes removed), cording (the buildup of tight scar tissue) or loss of range of motion. I would have talked with the oncology surgeon, and gotten a second opinion from a plastic surgeon, had I not been comfortable with her. She is actually the head of our Breast Care Division of the hospital, and was the PCP's first choice for me.

I've done research and want a flat closure. Some of my research says oncology surgeons don't even know what that is. Do you need a plastic surgeon? I'm just nervous. My tmbc tumor hasn't responded well to chemo so the doc thinks I will have cancer still after surgery. I mean if that is true you continue treatment while you're recuperating or do they let you recoup and then start treatment again? Are there any special things I need to be able to recoup after a single or double mastectomy? Some sites say yes you need a mastectomy Cami some say no. Some say a special pillow others just say pillow.

Stephanie- I am sorry you have to make this choice- I had a single mastectomy with flat closure (my choice). I am happy to answer any questions you might have if you think it would help! Tight hugs!
