Is Pathology Ever Wrong? Pathology Results From Mastectomy Are Different Than My Original Biopsy.

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Visalia, CA

Biopsy in May was HER2+ and hormone positive. Pathology from last week's mastectomy shows only HER2- and hormone positive. Feeling confused.

@A MyBCTeam Member Oh wow, that is new one to me as well. I do remember that my clinical staging was different than surgical, because chemotherapy did as good as could be expected for mine being agressive hormone positive, and i was told get 6 months high powered chemo straight away or die, well, I did it. At clinical I was 2b/3a.. After surgery I was DCIS, but since entire breast and cancerous nodes were removed, considered "cured".. NOW to YOU and what you are relaying just wow.. these results are relaying two different subtypes, say what?! Please call your onco nurse/nurses, leave a message if you don't get to talk to them, so they can return your call. Other than that, how have you been doing/ feeling? ~Hugs & Prayers~

I think surgeons should know exactly how many pathologist actually are going to look at the tissue before final diagnosis. Just like there are usually 2 radiologist that read scans. Interpretation is important, what they see. I believe in all aspects of the medical field there is the possibility of error.

Thank you, ladies! You bet I'm asking for clarification! It's just too weird and unsettling. Surgeon has already put in a call to the path lab and will call me after he talks to them. If needed, I will ask for retesting and I will keep you all updated. 🩷

But the tumor tests done from the surgery should never
switch from Her+ to HER- or vis versa.

That means that either the test was inaccurate, which should not happen or someone else’s information was reported.

Please check on this and ask for an explanation.
