Radiation With Implants After Mastectomy

What is your experience with having radiation after reconstruction and implants? Did radiation damage the implant? I’m stressing out over it…I really don’t want another surgery.

Radiation therapy after reconstructive surgery with implants can indeed be a concern. Here are some key points from my knowledge base:

- Timing of Radiation and Reconstruction: If you need radiation therapy after a mastectomy, it is generally recommended to undergo radiation first and then have reconstructive surgery. This is because radiation can delay healing and cause additional scarring if given after reconstruction.
- Potential Risks: Radiation therapy can interfere with the healing process and may lead to changes in the breast's appearance and color. It can also increase the risk of complications such as infection.
- Studies and Findings: Several studies have shown that smoking and being overweight significantly contribute to the chances of infection and complications after reconstructive surgery.

It's important to discuss your concerns with your oncologist and surgeon to develop a plan that minimizes risks and aligns with your preferences.

@A MyBCTeam Member, it was discovered during surgery through the pathology of my lymph nodes; that one of the three removed was positive for cancer. So…the reconstruction was done at the time of surgery and it was decided afterwards, that I would need radiation as I had already done chemotherapy before my mastectomy because my lump was so large. One thing I have learned, is that every woman’s breast cancer story is DIFFERENT. I try not to compare, but curiosity gets me at times. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my implant remains intact from radiation. Thank you for your input. God bless 💕

Hi Jessica,I had radiation after my implant. I had no problems or issues with it.

It just seems like it was backwards to put the implant in first.

I have never liked my implant from day 1.

Why not radiation first?

They put it under the muscle and I have had muscle spasms for 11 years.

I will not have it replaced. I will be happy with a prosthesis.

Glad you like yours.

Take care.

I had tissue expanders placed Aug 2022 during my bilateral mastectomy. I had 31 rounds full chest radiation Nov/Dec 2022 with the expanders in place. I had no issues with the expanders during radiation. All went fine. My exchange surgery was May 2023 to implants. No problems there either. In my day to day activities, I rarely think about the implants.
