Would You Take Anti-seizure Medication If You Are Undergoing Targeted SRS Radiation Treatment To Your Brain If You've Never Had A Seizure?
If you've been following my posts, you are aware I have 4 small brain mets that need radiation therapy. The recommendation is targeted SRS therapy which can be done in one session. The doc is also recommending I take 500 mg twice a day 4 days prior to treatment and 3 days after treatment. This is to prevent a seizure. At first, I thought okay, not that I'm happy about it but I really don't want to deal with a seizure so I'll take the medication. Then I thought about it and it just didn't… read more
I had 5 regular radiation treatments to my sternum and 5 SBRT radiations to my hip. My sternum has been stable ever since, cancer stopped growing there and new bone has grown. The 5 SBRT to hip done last March, I guess I will find out on Friday when I get a CT done to check another issue higher up on my hip than that one was. But radiation works, it kills cancer cells and stops them from growing.
@A MyBCTeam Member it would definitely make a difference. But no matter where she has it there will be something that comes into play because it's your brain albeit minor. What after effects I had were hard but I was eventually able to overcome them.
@A MyBCTeam Member - thank you so much for sharing your story. I appreciate it. I’m very glad to hear you have made good progress getting back to YOU.
I know it seems like I’m hanging myself out to dry choosing not to take the anti seizure medication. If I was having surgery or whole brain radiation, I definitely would take it. With SRS targeted radiation & considering my situation it leaves me uneasy especially knowing that some doctors prescribe it and others do not. The doctor that’s doing the radiation said I could take it or not take it, that the protocol has changed a bit. She also feels within about 2 days I’ll be back to myself. I understand this may or may not be the case. I will have the prescription on hand should I need it but if I’m one of the lucky ones that tolerates the procedure well, I think that route is best for my body. My decision is not an emotional one. It is a well thought out one based on the research I’ve done, what the doctor said and how I respond to medication. I’m not closed off about taking it. I’m open minded. I need to listen to my intuition on this one. The medical profession saves many lives & medications are a part of that. However, that being said, doctors frequently over medicate & prescribe pharmaceuticals when it’s not necessary. It’s the patient that pays the price. I’m not saying that’s the case in my current situation. I’m saying patients need to advocate, research, listen to how a recommendation lands within themselves. Just don’t agree with everything a doctor says. Truth be told, if I listened to the first oncologist I met when I was first diagnosed in 2019, I would have passed a long time ago. What he recommended was way too toxic. It would have killed me. I got a second opinion and everything was changed up. This road certainly has it’s challenges, right decisions, wrong decisions, etc. We can only do the best we are able to at the time 💖
@A MyBCTeam Member Yes, you are very strong my friend. For all of us that are in the fire...we are Not Alone! God is in there with us!! We can do All things through Christ Jesus. 🔥👣👣🕊👍
God works in mysterious ways, and though Covid is never fun, thank goodness for the headaches that led them to discover the Mets so early.
I used to work with a student who has TSC Tubular Sclerosis Complex- with that condition the body continues to make benign tumors- the problem is that tumors take up space and cause problems. She has had several radiation treatments to the brain (a favorite spot of TSC). Each time, the radiation has been successful. She is amazingly resilient! (and has the cutest giggle!)
Adding in my prayers for every success with your procedure! Tight Hugs!
