Starting chemotherapy can be daunting, but it's great that you're exploring options to manage side effects. Here's some information about cooling caps and their effectiveness in preventing hair loss during breast cancer treatment:

- Effectiveness: Cold caps can significantly reduce hair loss during chemotherapy. Effectiveness ranges from 27% to 90%, with an overall effectiveness rate of 61%. The effectiveness can vary depending on the chemotherapy drugs used.
- User Experiences: Many users report satisfaction with cold caps. Some experienced only thinning, while others retained a significant amount of hair.
- Side Effects: Common side effects include headache, scalp and neck pain, dizziness, nausea, and chilliness. Some users find the initial coldness uncomfortable, but it often becomes more tolerable as the scalp numbs.

For more personalized advice, consult your oncologist to see if cold caps are suitable for your specific treatment regimen.

I think it depends on what your treatment is. Certain drugs are brutal on hair, some not as bad. At the time, I would have jumped at cold capping. In hind site, I couldn’t have done it. I had chemo, the winter of the polar vortex. I was cold all the time. I am told the first 15 minutes are a bad brain freeze. Plus, it can add up to 2 hours to the infusion. I wanted out when I was done. I am told it does not work well for AC, which I had. And it costs thousands of dollars.
As far as using cooling mittens and socks, I absolutely would if I was getting a Taxane (Taxol or Taxotere). I had Taxol. I iced my hands, not my feet. I did have neuropathy in both by the time I was done. It completely resolved in my hands, I have mild residual in my toes. I have heard of people being left with terrible neuropathy.
Wishing you well!

The boots and mittens can help minimize neuropathy. I did not have those, and wish I did because the neuropathy in my feet made them feel like I was walking on fire with every step. Fortunately, most of it healed, I still have some numbness in the tips of my toes and fingers. I did not do the cooling cap, insurance does not usually cover it, and it is not always successful. Others here have used it, so I am sure they will chime in and share their experiences with you! Keeping you in prayers! Hugs!
