Why Chemo After A Bilateral Mastectomy
I am sure having you for support- especially since you have already been through this yourself- is very much appreciated by your friend. My diagnosis was Grade 3 as well- which is aggressive. So between that and the high Onco score, it is not surprising they recommended chemo. Hugs to both of you!
Thank you. I was actually asking for a good friend of mine who just had the surgery and is debating on whether to do the chemo or not. I went through this five years ago but mine was treated with radiation and Arimidex. Her cancer was a grade 3 but Iām not sure the stage but she opted for the bilateral mastectomy and now her doctor said that her oncotype was 40 and that it would benefit her to do chemo. Thank you.
There is always a chance that there may be cancer cells circulating through your system via the blood stream or lymphatic system. Since chemo would also travel through your body, it can hopefully destroy those extra cells before they have a chance to settle in somewhere else and cause additional problems. While chemo is not fun- it is do-able, and for most of us, it turns out not to be as bad (thankfully!) as what our imaginations were preparing us for. Keeping you in prayers as you move into the next phase of kicking bc to the curb! Hugs!
Chemotherapy after a bilateral mastectomy may be recommended for several reasons:
- Adjuvant Chemotherapy: This is given to destroy any remaining cancer cells that might not be visible or detectable through imaging tests. It helps lower the risk of cancer recurrence
- Cancer Stage: If the cancer was at an advanced stage Show Full Answer
