Double Mastectomy

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

So I just completed my last chemo treatment last Friday. I have triple negative breast, cancer,I am now scheduled to have a double mastectomy on February 2. I’m very nervous. I only have cancer in my left breast stage 2b. I hope that I’m making the correct decision, doing a double mastectomy. If I have a chance of it reoccurring wouldn’t I rather it just come back to my breast instead of removing the other one and it’s spreading somewhere else. what are your thoughts and what have you all done… read more

I had a double mastectomy in June. Only right breast, I’m her2+. It was the right decision for me. It’s aggressive so I went radical with reconstruction so hopefully I’ll never deal with this again. Best of luck! Hugs

I don't have the braca gene but I had 2 lumps in one breast and cancer found in lymph nodes. The one lump, stage 3 that was herceptin positive responded really well to chemo, the other lump stage 1 didn't and stayed the same size. I had no other option other than a mastectomy and axillary node clearance. It's a week since my op and while my arm hurts, I have a lot more mobility and an easier recovery with a single mastectomy. For me I have more symptoms from the lymph node clearance. I'd find out from your doctor your risks of reoccurence should you treat only the one breast. I have been 'uncomfortable' but I am able to sleep and in 3 weeks time hope to be able to join friends for a spa weekend. I have ordered a swimsuit with boob for the pocket. Whether I am able to swim will be another question but after 8 months of treatment I feel I am on my way to getting my life back. Cancercreoccurrence is always on the cards though.

I had a lumpectomy in July 2023 that was discovered in Dec 2022 but looking back at symptoms it had already metastasized probably a year before. So, it skipped the other breast and one out 4 sentinel nodes were positive. So, instead of going to my other breast and all 4 sentinel nodes it went to my sternum, then on my hip. I had a mammogram 2 months ago and both breasts were still clear, but a new lesion was found on my spine. So, having breasts didn't make a difference. They say mastectomy doesn't offer any more protection than lumpectomy but my point, having breast didn't protect me from it going somewhere else.
Now, you do have TNBC which is a can be aggressive and you carry those 2 genes so I think a double mastectomy would probably be more beneficial for you.

I'm on day 10 of double masectomy recovery. My oncologist suggested a lumpectomy would do the trick for my stage 1b TNBC. I opted for the big surgery for piece of mind and do not regret it. No cancer was found in 3 lymph nodes removed. My surgeon was amazing and very skilled. I am on my way to ring the bell next week and my health, diet, exercise and mental toughness are all on me now. I'm taking this seriously as I never want to repeat this journey

I had the same thoughts as you! TNBC stage1, grade 3, 2018.
I agonized over this decision.
My knee jerk reaction was double mastectomy. My surgeon said it wasn’t necessary, as I was stage 1, and tested genetically negative for any known breast cancer mutations. She did suggest I do research, maybe get a second opinion. If I still wanted the mastectomies, she would do it. My second opinion said the same thing.
Once I made my decision, I let go, and accepted my choice.
You have to do you. Wishing peace and acceptance for you!
