What Is The Difference Between A Diagnosis Before Or After Age 70

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Diagnosed at age 60 now again in other breast at age 73. So far I have seen differences with the surgery. Will I see difference in the post surgery treatment plan when I meet with the oncologist?

Also, I did have lymph nodes removed at 76. My cancer was Invasive so the surgeon had to find out if it was in the lymph nodes too. Maybe your cancer this go round was not Invasive and lymph node removal wasn't necessary.

Please ask questions until you're satisfied that you understand everything and you understand the reasons for treatment decisions.

I am somewhat confused that there is less concern because of my age? Does the cancer grow and spread slower or it just doesn’t matter as much?

Pat, I would ask the doctor why he/she did not take any lymph nodes this time. It could be that your cancer this time is different.

I'm 76, dx'd with Invasive papillary carcinoma, ER+PR+HER2 negative, less than 2cm. I had a lumpectomy and now radiation for 16 treatments.

I'm very sensitive to discussions about age. I always ask why decisions are made. I want to make sure the decision is based on my health, not a number.

Don't be afraid to ask.

Lymph nodes were removed during surgery on my first diagnosis and dye injected to determine if cancer had spread. Neither was done this time
