Should I Have Radiation Even Though I Only Had One Lymph Node Postitve?
I had a bilateral mastectomy with one positive lymph node found. The radiation oncologist gave me data for and against why or why I shouldn't have radiation. During her talk she made it sound like I either have radiation or I have all my axillary nodes taken out. I asked her about a third option of neither one and she said the percentage of recurrence didn't change. I then spoke to my surgeon and he was not for radiating the chest wall or surgery. He said if I had any radiation to only do the⦠read more
it never hurts to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion. If you are feeling there has to be another option. Please go you will beat your selfup later if you do nto do this. My first time around I wish I asked more questions and went for another opinion. It does not hurt and you will not get your doctors upset. This is your life you are talking about.
I had 31 lymph nodes lite up but only one confirmed for cancer. I didn't need radiation because my chest wall is healthy and breast tissue removed.
What about triggering Lymphodema from taking out so many lymph nodes????? Lymphodema sounds worse to me than the cAnceR. I have problems from just having 5 nodes removed all cancer free with my Mx for a 4cm IDC tumor. I had No radiation on those but did do 30 rads on 2'suspicous' clavicular nodes, they couldn't remove or do a biopsy on. The rads didn't hurt, took only 2 minutes a day and I had no side effects from it other than a red neck. I took resveratrol supplements per my rad oncologist, to protect from skin damage and kept it constantly moisturized after every treatment. It never blistered or peeled. The redness disappeared pretty quickly afterwards too. I wouldn't allow radiation of the Mx site because of the Reconstruction I had planned and because all my margins had been clear, no Axalary nodes, no skin or muscle, nerve or vascular involvment. For Recon it's best NOT to have radiated skin because of healing problems. Do some research yourself before you decide. I think you are doing alot of chemo! I only did 2 rounds of 4 perscribed for me to shrink the tumer BEFORE my Mx. I was told that's just how they do it, when I asked why when 2 shrank it completely gone. I simply didn't agree with the reasoning of it based on the research I was doing. I found another oncologist who agreed with me. He was the rad onc and also treated with immunotherapy, nutritional supplementation to build up the immune system, your best chance at fighting cancer. God bless you to make the best decision for YOU and that you will feel comfortable with. Don't be pushed or rushed into any treatment. Don't accept SOC treatment(standard of care)when you are an individual. You don't just fit into a certain catagory and 'that's just the way they do it' answers are an insult. This is your life! Don't be put on an assembly line! You participate in and drive your own treatment!
Radiation was a killer to me, if I had a a redue I would not have done it. During my radiation treatments masive scarring to my lung occured.
If you can avoid radiation, by all means do it!!! I have extensive damage from radiation. I would never radiate for one node!!! Hope this helps you decide. It IS your decision and only you can make it. Do what your gut is telling you, it will be the right thing. πππ
