Does All Chemo That Treats Breast Cancer Cause You To Lose Your Hair?
I am new to this journey--my surgery will probably be on 1/16. I know I need chemo because at least 1 lymph node is + for cancer. I am just curious if I should definitely plan on losing my hair or if there are chemo treatments that don't have that as a side effect. Does anyone know?
Any chemo that they would give you for breast cancer will likely (95%+ odds) cause you to lose your hair.
I have heard tell of some mythical creatures that did not lose their hair, but I have never met one. And I've interacted with many survivors on various boards such as this so while I'm sure these people exist... they are very rare.
I am sorry to be so blunt, but I just want you to be prepared for the reality that is chemo.
Like Apguarin said, chemo is your ally in the fight for your life. Losing your hair can be very very difficult, but it will grow back. My mother calls things like that "character building" which I translate to "really sucky, but most likely worth the cost."
My advice is to consider getting a short cut prior to surgery. If you get a mastectomy, you won't be able to lift your arms above your head for at least a week. Having a really short pixie cut makes hair maintenance much eaiser during tha time and can help you prepare for the eventual loss of your mane.
Sorry. I know this is hard. I wish you all the luck in your upcoming battle.
Yes you will lose your hair. Take it one day at a time...one hour at a time. Some people react differently, but I definitely liked not having to shave my legs or arm pits. It will grow back.
I had about 25 treatments of chemo and did lose my hair. But here's what I did..........I found what I called "bangs on a stick." It was a bendable, thin metal piece that you wear like a headband with hair attached. Wear it under a hat or whatever and it looks like you have bangs! No one ever knew those bangs were not mine! Worked really well!! Look on Etsy or other wig stores.
Yes hair loss be prepared it feels so aweful but it will come back...i went n got myself some comfy hats n a nice wig and you just get yiur hair cut then as mine was falling out i took control back borrowed my mates hair clippers n shaved it off..when ir started coming back with advice from hairdresser i shaved it two more times as it was fine baby fluff..then left it and it came back thick and curly and thsnk god it still is i love my hair and i was greatful for my hats and wigs..fight it girl kick cancers bu and watch your hair grow back
Ask your Onc but most likely you will loose your hair which can be somewhat traumatic or it was for me worse than loosing the breast however you get over that pretty quickly. What I would suggest is you get your head shaved versus letting it come out in clumps on your pillow. My hairdresser said what are you crying for lots of people shave their heads including me for style. You can get bright colored scarfs and have fun. I bought wigs but never used them....Toooooo dam hot but everyone is different! Good Luck ! You will know more once your surgery is complete and your cancer staged. Here is a HUGE TIP.. Everyone is different and sometimes medical people in trying to be supportive say oh it wont be so bad. For example they told me the first 4 rounds were the really bad ones but the Taxol would be a piece of cake. Well guess what I sailed pretty much through the hard stuff and had to come off Taxol as it kicked my ass.Just go one day at a time.
