Hey Zee, just looked at your profile. So it looks like you've had the lumpectomy already and your new scans are totally clean?

So what is next?

You do not have to have a mastectomy. In fact, being stage 2, if the doctor feels as though he got all the cancer in the original lumpectomy, they recommend NOT getting a mastectomy. They feel it is "overtreatment". The recurrance rates for lumpectomy followed by chemo and radiation is pretty much the same as a person who has a mastectomy and chemo.

So a mastectomy will not decrease your chance of recurrance. There is no medical need for one at this point.

In terms of "what next?" It looks like you are a triple negative girl. Which means you will be doing chemo. Chemo is generally a 4-6 month ordeal (depending on what course of chemo you are prescribed).

After chemo, if you choose NOT to have a mastectomy, you will likely get radiation. From my understanding, this is usually every day, 5 days per week, for 6 weeks.

I'm not an oncologist, but the treatments are pretty standard. If you are triple negative (ER-, PR-, HER2-), that is all the treatment that is available to you. There will be no longer term treatment (so no Herceptin or hormone blockers).

Does that answer your question?

Hello Zee. What stage are you in? Have you been treated for breast cancer in the past? Treatment recommendations are based on stage. When I had stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma, chemo was strongly recommended but I refused because it was not recommended by the american cancer society. Ended up having lumpectomy, axial node resection and radiology.
