Nail Discoloration

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hey this is my week three after my first chemo , taxotere herceptin and perjata. The base of my thumb is becoming black....is that something any of you had? Is that the beginning of the nail falling out?

I also had the darkening on my nails everyone of them also on my toe nail. The infusion nurse reassured me that it would all pass, it was normal with chemo. At first I thought other things were happening. So far I have had surgery and getting ready for radiation and my nails are looking much better the darkening is almost all gone no worries.

All my nails turned darker- and just grew out. It stopped after chemo and they continued to grow normal.

I had fantastically strong nails before chemo...i developed dark "stripes" on my nails representing each chemo treatment (like the rings on a tree). Those rings eventually merged into each other and are now 'lifting' off the bed. I will not lose them completely, but I am lucky. Clip your nails short, do not use nail polish (as difficult as that may be), keep them clean, be careful with your hands and nails...

I naturally have paper thin nails so I freaked when I first saw the darkening. After chemo was over, the normal color returned. And my nails look just the same. So don't worry yourself too much about it. Dieting, herbal supplements don't actually do the trick for many of the breast care patients.
