Brown Nails

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Gambrills, MD

I had read about some patients having their nails become discolored -and even losing them.
Mine started turning brown after my 5th chemo (TCH) -I thought I had gotten away ok! Now I am done with all 6-but it's getting worse .
I was putting tea tree oil on them every night -religiously and I thought it was helping and my nails actually seemed stronger.
So-for anyone who has had this problem-
did anything help?
did it go away over time?
thanks

During breast cancer treatment, nails on the fingers and toes can undergo various changes, including pigment shifts. This can result in nails appearing darker than normal. If you notice any concerning changes, it's important to speak with your health care provider.

Here are some tips to manage nail changes during treatment:
- Practice Good Nail Care: Avoid artificial nails, use water-soluble nail polish if approved by your physician, and keep nails trimmed short.
- Moisturize: Use cuticle cream to keep cuticles soft and prevent breaking.
- Monitor Changes: Regularly check your nails and report any unusual changes to your health care team.

Sorry this took so long... I had another PET scan because my breast cancer is spreading and they want to see specifically the areas affected.

The Pet scan done in 2020 showed the breast cancer had travelled.
