Ovary Removal

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Avon, CT

I am 43 y.o premenopausal. My tumor was ER+ . I am on Tamoxifen now. My doctor told me to take Tamoxifen for a few years and then we will see....closer to the menopause we can discuss ovary removal. Ladies, with the similar Dx and age , what was you doctor's suggestion?

I was 48 years old when I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in my left breast. My female hormones fueled my cancer. I was on Tamoxifen for approximately a year when I asked my oncologist about a total hysterectomy because Tamoxifen has a 5% chance of causing uterine cancer. My oncologist told me that was a decision because my gynecologist and myself. I also have several year h/o uterine fibroids. My GYN was empathetic to my reasons and also recommended to remove both ovaries. I told my oncologist the decision I had made to have a total hysterectomy and bilateral ooherectomy and she told I would need to d/c [[treatment:Tamoxifen:540f562a[[phone:8608758280000445]] 2:]] weeks prior to my surgery. I have no regrets having all the girlie parts removed.

KVB, my Onc also suggested to monitor for side effects as well as annual vaginal ultrasound, annual eye exam. I am taking double dose of Tamoxifen since my cyp2d6 genetic test showed that I am an intermediate metabolized of it. So I was very concerned about higher dose of Tamox and I asked md about ovary removal and taking Aromatase inhibitor instead. That was when the doctor suggested against it for now. My dx was highly ER+... And I am constantly thinking if I should go more radical and remove the major source of estrogen .

I do not see your Doctors reasoning. ? Did he give u a medical explanation on his opinion.? When my ONC first have me the Tmoxifen I told him my Mom and her sister both had uterine cancer. His answer was we will watch u closely ten months later I have suffered every unusual and painful side effect of Tamoxifen. I stopped it a week ago My ONC agreed. I have been bed ridden for about five weeks. Slowly getting a tiny. Bit better. My PCP has set me up with a GYN to discuss removing it all
