Is Anyone Having Increased Tooth Decay After Chemo And Hormone Blockers

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Nashville, NC

I am having increased dental decay despite regular dental care and exams. I had BMX, 6 rounds of chemo and recently stopped aromatase inhibitors after 2 years due to side effects.

I had the same problem. Chemo causes the fast growing cells to die and bleeding and soreness happen (yes, your mouth is full of those types of cells). Anti-estrogens can cause mouth sores as well. I used a very soft tooth brush, drank lots of water to keep my mouth moist (also flushes out bacteria that can cause decay), stopped eating sugary foods, and did other things. You may want to consult a dentist. If you can't consult a dentist, here's a link that has information: http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/OralHealth/Topics/canc...

I used Biotene through the whole treatment. I also use a mineral paste at night. And I am getting a fluoride treatment every 3 months from my dentist. She feels sure she can save my teeth. Of course all of this is expensive and insurance won't cover it.

Yes, I am having dental issues. Increased decay and some fillings coming lose. This was a shock to me and my dentist. I had a BMX, 6 rounds of chemo and stopped Arimidex after 1.5 yrs for the same reason. When I researched this I found that this is one of the "late effects" of Taxotere. I was very upset.

Hi, doll. I didn't just have mouth sores, bleeding gums and a burnt tongue, mine was so bad that I got a jaw infection and had to stop my chemo because the infection was so bad. You need to go to your dentist. They have toothpastes and mouthwashes that really can help. Don't wait till it gets to max pain.
