So last year I went out on std, I still paid my portion of my heath insurance. here is my question: if flma only guarantees your job for 12 weeks...what happens after that? How do you afford medical care after that because I know Cobra is outrageous...

Check to see if you have Long Term Disability because that is what is helping me now that I am not returning to work... my COBRA was 750 plus dollars thats with dental... so my LTD helped pay that.. because I did get Social Security Disability, as I have Chronic back pain issues before and with the cancer DX. Plus I tapped into some small pensions I had... not a lot but every little bit helps... Prayers that something works out for you.... you didn't say if you qualify for Social Security. Today I just went in an got my own insurance because the COBRA expires in 2 mths.... took a high deductible with BC/BS but its about half of what I am paying now.... they can't punish us for pre existing. But in about 8 mths I will qualify for Medicare. If you can get Soc Security Disability you get a little more in your checks and qualify for Medicare after about 18 mths or so ..... don't know if any of this helps you.

My employer granted me 12 months personal leave after my 12 wk FMLA was exhausted. While I'm on leave I keep my original insurance that I make my payments to benefits dept. Hope that helps.

@A MyBCTeam Member I believe FLMA secures your employment for 12 weeks but then I believe its at the companies digression after that. Do you have an HR department that you can talk to directly? Do you have a nurse navigator at your hospital/cancer center that you can talk to regarding healthcare? I know cobra is crazy. But maybe the hospital can help since you want to find a healthcare provider that is already participating with your medical team.
I am trying to get SS disabitly. Just denied once. I heard I can apply one more time on my own before I need a lawyer :(
Shouldn't this stuff be easier for us!??! Good luck Debbie!
