Dense Breast Tissue

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question đź’

I was diagnosed with Stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma in 2012. (As well as Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma). I always get a letter with my mammogram results stating I have very dense breast tissue and I should talk to my physician about further testing. I did talk to my gyne and he agreed to order an ultrasound. When I went, the radiologist refused. She said they never do an ultrasound on the whole breast, it is too much tissue to cover. It is only used for looking at a specific suspicious area… read more

There is a test called automated whole breast ultrasound that only certain breast care centers are able to do - yes, Having a technician review your whole breast manually with a wand is expensive and probably difficult...the automated whole breast ultrasound requires a less technical person to roll a device over both breasts while you are lying down. I had it and it was useful. I had to pay $150 out of pocket. So look for the automated whole breast ultrasound and even better, if you can get it, an MRI - that's the gold standard - false positives and all - you will get to the bottom line!

Before I was diagnosed with BC, I had ultrasounds every year when I had my mammogram BECAUSE I had dense breasts and yes they did the whole breast, both sides.

Because my IDC didn't ever show up on mammograms because of dense tissue, my post-treatment screening alternates between mammograms and MRIs. I'll be screened at 6-month intervals. My radiation oncologist said studies showed that ultrasounds were not good for screening.

Since diagnosis I get mammo on remaining breast and ultrasound on both. One tech didn't want to do it on my mastectomy side. I told her my doctor ordered it so do it! They do the whole breast on the "real side".
