Low WBC Count
I finished chemo in February. Had surgery (BMX) March 24. I am healing well. Began radiation May 18. My CBC this week showed my WBC count to be low. Has anyone else had this happen?
I had this almost zero after my second chemo treatment and developed a systemic infection that put me in the hospital for a few days. Not fun, but afterwards I received Neulasta the day following my chemo. The side effects from the Neulasta are not fun (think Harry Potter in his infirmary as the grow his new bone!) but it took care of the problem. Don't know how this translates into radiation, but discuss it with your radiologist. BTW, after working in schools for 38 yrs, I really don't get sick, so this was a rare experience. I have since been more cautious not to eat f & v that can't be peeled, use a mask when out in a store, etc, and wash hands almost obsessively. I also make sure to regularly disinfect things like knobs and handles, electronic remotes, phones and the recliner handle. For the duration, I am using more things like paper towels and disposable plates, utensils, cups, etc. for myself and use surgical gloves I can throw away when I handle dirty laundry or dishes. I am also skipping crowds, movie theaters, and eating in restaurants. I still get food as takeout, but don't take chances of a crowded place. This may seem extreme, but the danger of a low WBC is being more likely to not fight off germs and pick up an infection. And it is temporary. Life will continue when this is over, so I think the inconvenience is a minor thing !
You make some very valid points. I'm new at this so will definitely take heed to your sterile practices.
My Chemo Was Canceled Because My White Blood Cell Count Was Very Low.
