Insomnia During Hormone Therapy

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Pennsburg, PA

I have been taking Arimidex as my hormone therapy since Thanksgiving. I am experiencing insomnia. My sleep medicine, ambien, doesn't work well.

Has anyone had this problem and if so, how do you get to sleep?

So far the only side effects I have are the insomnia and I have rashes in a variety of places; face, back of hands, inside my elbow.
I haven't had full blown Hot flashes, but I have been warmer than usual.
I lost twenty pounds on radiation and I hope I don't gain it back!
It's been six weeks since I started taking it and do far, no joint pain.

Ive been on arimidex 1yr 3months and between the hair loss again and the joint and leg pains(esp. right leg)and shoulders now, which I think the cold weather may have something to do with that now,it's something else. My mouth stays dry and I have to drink a ton of water and green tea almost weekly. I had lost about 35lbs but I am seeing it find it's way back so I think the weight gain may play some part in my misery as well. Of course the tiredness doesnt go away. I work 40hrs wk and not much gets done at home unless Im having one of those restless nights, which are not often. 7hrs of sleep is all I can stand anyway.Mornings my hands hurt and my fingers tingle. Once in a while I will take an aleve but not often. Im faithful with my vitamins and prayer. I thank God for making my crooked paths straight because sometimes it feels like I cant keep up. But he gives me the strenghth to keep moving. I cancelled YMCA because of not having the energy to go anymore after work. I had hoped my son would go with me for encouragement. But he's young(23), married, has a 3yr old. My other 3 sons live away. Anyway, its going to be alright. We will all be alright. Just have to keep the faith!

You need to find out if your insomnia is due to hotflashes that awakens you at night or it's just you cannot fall to sleep. I'm taking Tamoxifen and my insomnia is related to having hotflashes and shivers at night, so I wake up and that interrups my sleep about twice at night. I've heard melatonin might help with insomnia. Also sage tea for hotflashes. Best wishes to you.

Hi Lori....I'm on Tamoxifen and I can't stay asleep...My advice would be to go see the therapist...they can work with you.....Yoga and mindfulness meditation also work sometimes. I think some people are ok with the meds....and some are a little more sensitive! Good Luck!
