Shoulder Tear After Mastectomy?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone else experienced a rotator cuff tear following mastectomy? I am reading that there may be a corilation between the two and I have a partial tear.

I had a partial tear after exchange surgery, very painful. I got two rounds of cortisone shots to relieve the pain but range of motion is limited still. There is a connection

I have had worsening shoulder pain and loss of motion in both shoulders since my second diagnosis in 1993. They have been X rayed, scanned and MRI'ed numerous times but nothing has been said about the rotator cuff. It has been diagnosed as tendonitis, bursitis, bone spurs, and arthritis. Now they are telling me because I have all those problems in my neck, that my neck could be causing problems in my shoulders. I've been given the runaround by Drs more times than I care to admit, and this really feels like the same thing. What do you do? Where do you go? And who do you believe? Your guess is as good as mine, Ladies! My BC treatment included 72 radiation treatments to my chest with boosters to both armpits. Knowing what this did to my heart and lungs it is perfectly logical to me that similar damage was done to my shoulders. However, finding someone who will admit this is absolutely impossible. I hope you ladies find the answers to your shoulder pain. God bless you 💗💗💗

@A MyBCTeam Member This is not uncommon after a mastectomy and lymph node removal. I had it.. I went to physcial therapist for a few sessions, then took the exercises home with me so I could continue doing them. My shoulder produced a popping sound. both my shoulders had same thing. Hopefully you can strengthen the shoulder.

@A MyBCTeam Member, progress this week with lymphedema therapy. Arm down from 64% larger than other arm to 12% larger in 9 days and 5 wraps. Feel better and can do more. Cancer and lymphedema at same time is a real bummer. Eagerly awaiting my compression sleeve. Still can't lift and left arm range of motion Is very limited. Exercising for both. Hope you are getting some relief...

I think because we are lacking in estrogen, it makes us more susceptible to injuries. I certainly have noticed a big difference particularly in the aging process.
