Implants After Radition

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone had experience with filling tissue expanders and getting silicone implants later on, AFTER radiation treatments??? I had TE placed at the time of my mastectomies, due to complications including necrosis, second surgery to excise the dead tissue and hematoma, a seroma, and a severe case of colitis, my expanders only had 1/4 of the saline that we were aiming for, when I had to start radiation. Now I am left with an oddly shaped breast that has moved up on my chest. Just wondering if… read more

I had my expanders placed before radiation but I only got 3 fills cause they didn't want them too full. I had them filled the rest of the way and exchange later. It seems fine. No problems. The expanders got very uncomfortable so it was great having them out. The surgery was sooo much easier then mastectomy. Like really No pain! And I had a hysterectomy at the same time. No pain! You will do great! Good luck!

Oh no! This doesn't sound good. For 7 months I kept telling my surgeon and plastic surgeon there is something wrong with my left extender. I was ignored!!!! Told it was nerve pain and lymphnode removal. Went through chemo and radiation (they emptied extenders on both side). Left side was paining me bad. Finally I said after finishing radiation please get to my issue. My plastic surgeon tells me without even ordering a X-ray that extenders need to come out. They don't know what's wrong! Well I just got my pathology report. Called medical office. Chronic inflammation and capsulation lining. And a Seroma! 7 months of cruel pain as my body rejecting the extender on left. I will never go back to this plastic surgeon again!!! Liar.

I had expander put in place at same time as mastectomy, got 5 fills before radiation, but had to have some of the saline removed for 5 weeks of radiation so it wasn't as big, after I finished went back to my refills, then had a LAT flap done. I had to wait 6 months for this to heal and then I had a lift on the right and got my implant.I have had several fat grafts and about 2 years ago I had another lift and implant put in on the right because of weight loss. I had one booby bigger than the other and I would do it all over again if I had to. Believe it or not I am not vane, just wanted to look normal.

@A MyBCTeam Member I had 5 weeks of radiation, I had to wait about 2 weeks for my radiation burn to heal and I had a fill every week until we got as much as I could comfortably take. I had my flap done about 6-9 months after my mastectomy. We did fat grafts once my implants had been in awhile and healed, to help fill in places that my skin was not able to plump out. I am very happy with my results and would do it all over again, even had my tattoo done.
