My Period Has Returned While On Tamoxifen, Is This Normal?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been on Tamoxifen now for 3 full months, after the first month my period stopped, today, it has returned! Should this be a concern? Should I call my oncologist or gynecologist?

My period stopped and came back the same way. My onc said nothing to worry about. It has been regular ever since. Lighter than before which is nice! I also haven't had much in the way of side effects. Hooray :)

PamelaSmiles; I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I have not been doing well. Anyway, they always told me that I should report any bleeding while on Tamoxifen. I would call my gynecologist just to be safe. Hopefully it's nothing, but you want to be sure. God bless. Take care of yourself.

That's a common misconception (that Tamoxifen stops periods). More often than not, periods are stopped by chemo but shortly thereafter women are placed on tamoxifen and so when chemo stops and periods resume (and this is common if you are younger rather than older), women automatically get scared that something is wrong. Tamoxifen only targets the estrogen receptor of a cancer cell and blocks it from receiving the estrogen already pulsating through your body. The only drugs that stop you from producing that estrogen are the aromatase inhibitor drugs. (i.e. Femara, etc.)

Mine did the same, stopped for a few months, came back, very light subsequent to returning. I think all of the stress plays a factor as well in periods stopping as well. If you are at all concerned though it is worth a check up to your gynecologist. As long as you aren't spotting between periods though you should be fine.

The oncology office does it. Thank god! I am a chicken too!! My skin on my tummy is just so tight from the tram that there is nothing to grab!
