Has Anyone Had Neuropathy That’s Worse A Year After Chemo Treatment?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Towson, MD

Partway through my 12 Taxol treatments, I began having pins and needles in my hands and feet. Over the next 8 months or so, it spread down my fingers to my wrists. I took Gabapentin but that did nothing so the neurologist put me on alpha lipoic acid 600mg per day. It seemed to get better slightly over the next 6 months. In the last 6 weeks it has gotten SO much worse that my right hand and fingers hurt 24/7. If they’re not hurting, they’re numb. It’s like they’re constantly “asleep “. My… read more

I would say it can take awhile to start feeling better from neuropathy. Each person is so different it seems, in how they respond to certain meds. I think there are a variety of things that impact neouropathy in my opinion, including how long you are out from having chemo. I know for me, mine has improved quite a bit in the last year due to increased activity and going off anastrozole and switching to Ibrance and Faslodex. I also reduced a number of meds I was taking. My fingers still get cramped, but stretching them with circulation exercises helps. I haven't noticed any issues in my feet for months and it has been a year and three months since discontinuing anastrozole. Otherwose, my routines and meds have been the same. Looking back, that and chemo were the biggest culprits. I haven't had IV chemo since July 2005, but currently take a pill form (Ibrance, a targeted chemotherapy drug) which seems to be less harsh on my body. The farther out from chemo and certain meds, the better. Then it is just a waiting game, in my opinion. Hang in there! Paula

I have the same symptoms with my right hand - hurts 24/7. And when I first wake up its the worst! I guess I need to change from Anastrozole?

I tried Gabapentin my first time around and had to stop it because I was falling asleep while driving. Not a good thing. I have heard that accupuncture works. Now, after this second round of chemo my neuropathy has gotten much worse than it was the first time around. I am trying InfraRed Light Therapy. I've only had 2 treatments yet, I will let you all know how well it works.

I have neuropathy as well. I quit taking Gabapentin due to the side effects and it was to help with sleep and night sweats. It didn't work that great for sleep and the night sweats returned. So I got off of it and take 500 mg of Magnesium. I now sleep very well!! I get those squishy balls and use those to exercise my hands. The more movement the better. I also have it in my feet, so doing 60 minites of cardio daily and 30 to 60 minites of yoga a day really help with my circulation! Hugs, Paula
