Onco Score 8 With Radiation And Estrogen Inhibitors Is There A Percentage Of Reoccurrence If I Don’t Take Anastrozole
Its false that your recurrence risk is cut in half by taking aromatase inhibitors (what many call “hormone therapy.” ) Your doc should be able to give you a recurrence risk estimate based on tumor markers etc and then give you a general percentage by which your risk may be reduced by taking the drug. You then need to use that percentage number to determine how it affects your absolute risk.
For example: let’s say your recurrence risk is 12% and you are told that drug A reduces your risk by 25%. Your absolute risk goes from 12% without that drug to 9% with it. That drug decreases your absolute risk by 3%. So when making treatment decisions and weighing the benefits against the side effects/diminished quality of life etc in this scenario many women think “well 25% is huge and therefore worth it” but in actuality the number to be looking at is 3%.
For the population of women with breast cancer overall, endocrine therapy cuts the risk of recurrence in half and risk of death by about 1/3. For most that is about 10%.

No matter what you take or what you do .... there is ALWAYS a chance of recurrence. You can never get that down to zero. What you have to do, along with help from medical team, is come up with the best treatment plan that you are comfortable with that reduces your risk down to the lowest level. Best wishes for you!
My joint pain has almost completely gone away on anastrozole. I’ve been taking extra calcium and had an infusion of Zometa this summer to help prevent osteoporosis. I had been diagnosed with osteopenia about 2 years ago. I got really sick for a few days after the infusion. I am doing pretty good now. It’s my off and on depression is driving me nuts though. Take care of yourself. Don’t let occasional depression get to you. Fight it off with something fun to do. Sending hugs and prayers your way.
Depending upon insurance, aromatase inhibitors can be quite cheap. I pay $8 for a 3 month supply of letrozole. I have no side effects. Worst case basis ....if you take it and then have to stop, at least the drug was cheap and any side effects would and should disappear. At least you can say you gave it a shot. I see no downside with trying anastrozole. Either way, decide with oncologist
Does Anyone Know The Percentage That Anastrozole Will Prevent A Recurrence? Have Just Switched From Being On Tamoxifen 😙
