Six Weeks Post Op - Anyone Not Driving?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi All -

I'm three weeks post op from double mastectomy with tissue expanders and lat flap on left side. While it's been a rough three weeks, it is getting better. The big thing right now is driving (well except the pain that I'm just living with......). I'm supposed to return to work in three weeks. I don't feel even close to being able to drive. I know a lot can happen in three weeks - I'm curious if anyone has been through this and not been driving by six weeks.

Thanks!

Jennie

Hi Pinkvictory - are you pretty much back to "normal" in your activity?

@A MyBCTeam Member hi, my bilateral mastectomy was August 2018. I don’t think I drove for about 7 weeks. I wasn’t ready and I didn’t feel I could turn and have enough range of motion. It does get better. At the time I was hard on myself thinking that I should have been making progress faster. We all heal differently. I had to accept that It’s not a race, my goal was to get better, and every day is one More step in healing. Look back and think about how far you’ve already come!

Thanks Rba - I have clearance, but don't feel ready yet. For me, it's an issue with my back. Working through it.....

I am 6 weeks post double masectomy with lymph node removal. I finally feel I'm ready to drive, although I haven't yet. Will wait for clearance. I went to physio and faithfully did the exercises as I did not want to lose full range of motion. At first, I was so scared I wouldn't get full range back as I could hardly move my arms. But it gets better.

There are exercises specifically for your surgery like the "wall crawl" that you can get online or through cancer resource organizations. Yes PT will help too, but the sooner you can get started, the better. Best of luck and keep fighting!
