Treatment After Tamoxifen

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Oshkosh, WI

I am 51 years old. I have been Taking Tamoxifen for 5 years after Double mastectomy and chemotherapy for stage 2B ER + INVASIVE DUCTAL CARCINOMA. My oncologist wants me to switch from Tamoxifin to an aromatase inhibitor for another 5 years. My blood work shows hormonally I am completely postmenopausal . Wondering if there is anyone who has switched. Experiences?

Yes, I was Tamoxifen from October 2nd 2016 to August 13th 2018. Started Anastrazole August 4th 2018 and will have to take for a full 5 years. As Inthegray stated everyone reacts differently and you will not know until you start it. I had pretty severe joint pain at first but it got much better. I have more good days than bad ones (but have also been recently diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis), so I think it is more the arthritis than the medication. But for me I decided to take the medication to help decrease the chance of a reoccurrance. It is a personal decision.

Yes, a total of 10 years is now recommend instead of 5. My oncologist will want to switch me as well in another year or do. She says AI’s are more effective.

Everyone reacts differently to potential side effects. Unfortunately you won’t know until you take it.
