Side Effects Of Herceptin

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question šŸ’
Gambrills, MD

I will begin Herceptin drip only on Friday. Who has had problems from this (once chemo was done).
Were you able to drive back and forth without any problems?
I was too 'out of it' after chemo-so my husband would drop me off and pick me up-but I want to go myself for the Herceptin.
Thanks !

Born with cancer 66 years ago, and Iā€™m dealing with cancer number five. I had one IV dose of Herceptin which was a double dose. I did have some side effects, but I am not a good one to measure by. From what I understand, it is much more gentle than chemo. You probably will be all right, but I would recommend having someone to drive you the first time.

My chemo cocktail was taxotere, carboplatin, and herceptin. Once the chemo was done, my neuropathy slowly improved. I remained on Herceptin, iv infusion, every three weeks for the remainder of the year. No real problems, all my problems were with taxotere, and carboplatin. The herceptin was quick, I was usually checked in, dosed, and out of there within in hour. I def could have driven myself back and forth, but the hubs was being supportive- lol! I usually took the day off from work, and would do the infusion in the morning, go for lunch, and then hit some other doctor appts. With the herceptin, you do still have to have the cardiogram every so often (for me it was every 3 months plus the baseline prior to chemo).

I know a few others here had side effects that involved their heart or lungs, but it went well for me. Wishing you the best with it as well!!

Hope you are one of the many women with no side effects from Herceptin. Unfortunately, I had terrible neuropathy all over that started about a week after the infusion and just got worse and worse. Managed 3 cycles and had to give it up. The first day or so wasn't bad and I could have driven if I needed to. Glad I didn't have to. It has really limited what I can do for treatment.

Same here! No problems, I started my chemo, which included Herceptin early January 2019. I had 6 rounds, 3 weeks apart, then the Herceptin only until the end of January 2020. You do have to have your heart checked every 3 months, but that is a quick, easy procedure. Wishing you all the best!
