How Many Are Dealing With Osteoporosis At The Start Of Aromatase Inhibitors And Are On Aromatase Inhibitors?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Rochester, NY

What are you doing during this process?
Can you take calcium tablets?

Are you working with both a doctor who deals in osteoporosis and your medical oncologist?

I took shots of Evenity once a month in the Drs office for bone lose. Medicare pays for it. Now I am getting shots of Prolia in the Drs office twice a year and Medicare pays for that also. My last scan said I was at risk for fracture which happened in my pelvis and i did not fall. Will have a scan in November. I have been taking Letrozole since August. I take calcium and Vitamin D every day. Try to eat yogurt and cheese.
Keep on going to the gym 3 days a week and lift weights. I will be 80 in November.
I also took Tamoxifin for 5 years twenty years ago.

Cancer changes many things…don’t we all know that!
Vitamins and what our bodies need is heavily impacted especially when on the Aromatase Inhibitor drugs.
I am not able to tolerate Calcium so my Oncologist and PCP have me taking:
A. Extra Strength Tums twice a day. I also take
B. D3 daily. As well as a
C. MultiVitamin

I was fortunate enough to see a Nutritionist and a Pharmacist (Yes, a pharmacist who went over ALL my medications) to see the whole picture and answer questions.

Bone Health is VIP. Understanding what the medications DO to your body is key to our Quality of Life! The Aromatase Inhibitor Drugs are HARSH to put it lightly!

Sending positive vibes to all!

Hi BarbaraDavis:

Thank you for your comforting thoughts.

Seems that there are pros and cons about taking calcium supplements as they may put calcium on your blood vessel walls some sites say. But other sites disagree with that or discount that.

I feel at this point like I am a medical researcher as we seem to need to know the side effects of various meds before sit downs with medical oncologists, including all the side effects of those meds to stop bone osteoporosis or, to somehow, by a miracle, re-grow bone. Plus, what happens to those same bones if you stop these products and bone starts to go the other way....? Lifetime products?

My onocolgist has not mentioned anything about taken calcium tablets. Another thing about too much calcium intake this is going to totally read weird it can also have the opposite effect of weaken your bones and possibly causing kidney stones. As for antacids yes they do contain calcium but that can raise your calcium levels also. I personally do not really want to see more doctors for the osteoporosis thing. I would rather drink milk and get some more calcium into me. It seems no matter what we do there seems to be downsides to everything. Why can't we just live the best life we can and enjoy what we can. Life is to short anyway and the does and don't of dealing with any type of major illnesses makes the time we have even shorter. Enjoy and embrace what time you do have and try to have a lot of laughs, fun if you can and live your life. 🥰
