I had my first mammogram post-surgery, radiation, etc. Initial results said all clear, but due to dense breast tissue recommended an MRI in 4 months. Following that I get a letter from the facility that performed the mammogram, stating there were several areas of "likely benign findings" that they recommended a follow up diagnostic mammogram to confirm they are not growing. My doctor said none of this is necessary and I should get a diagnostic mammogram in one year. I questioned that… read more

2. Explore Treatment Options:
- A second opinion may present new treatment options. For example, a study from the University of Michigan found that over half of the people who sought second opinions were recommended new treatment plans.

3. Evaluate the Facility:
- Consider factors such as the facility's accreditation, clinical trial opportunities, patient reviews, and medical outcomes.

4. Peace of Mind:
- Confirming your diagnosis and treatment plan with another healthcare team can provide peace of mind and confidence in your treatment journey.

5. Patient Satisfaction:
- Look into the satisfaction rates of other patients treated at the facility and the success rates of procedures like breast cancer surgery.

Remember, you have the right to seek a second opinion at any point in your breast cancer journey.

So my surgeon said I didn't need the additional mammogram, but I spoke with my oncologist and she has ordered the follow up mammogram in 3 months. I feel better knowing we're just staying on top of things. Yes, I get tired of seeing doctors, but I'm learning to advocate for myself. 😏

Agree with Laura, all these doctors have their area of expertise- and looking at those images- that's the specialty of the radiologist. I think sometimes a doctor may think we have "white coat fatigue"- that we are probably in need of a break from all the appts and tests. BUT, at the same time, that "extra" test may be what we need for peace of mind. I know that I would want it! For me, it would be second opinion time! Hugs!
