What to do if oncologist keeps trying to pressure me with chemo she said i am cancer free and no lymph nodes involved no genetics i had mastectomy and 5 nodes removed i understand preventive care but the side effects she said can cause cancer, heart failure, diabetes etc to name a few list is long. I told her im thinking no therapy then she made me appointment for chemo anyways

I had a lump removed and lymph nodes. I had a test taken that showed I had 30 percent chance of a secondary cancer. I took the chemo and radiation and the cancer drug. Still could happen but I did all that was available at this time. All of it scared me...but 1 year later I am still here.

Keeping you in prayers as you navigate the pros and cons of all your options.

Please know that chemo does not have to be an all or nothing. You can try and see what your side effects are. I tell people I had the buffet- a little bit of everything, but not too much of any. And for most of us, chemo has not been as bad as what our imaginations were preparing us for.

One of my drugs has a slight chance of being linked to leukemia later. So- do I not deal with the cancer I have now- because of the chance of a different cancer later?? Lots to think about.

But, I did choose the more radical surgery (mastectomy, no reconstruction), was able to skip the radiation, and completed my chemo. Being HER2+ I also had follow-up preventative infusions for the remainder of a year. I finished all that in January 2020, and so far- so good. I was 62 when diagnosed, took two months off from work to recover from surgery and the first two (of 6) chemos. I worked (and still do!) full time in a school, and continued my volunteer activities at the arboretum. You know you better than anyone- review all your options, get a second opinion- and listen to your inner voice. Tight Hugs!

You may want a second opinion; sounds as if you don't feel heard by your doctor. I hope she has fully explained why she is so strong on you having chemo.

The decision is yours, and you have to comfortable with it. I would get a second opinion . This could confirm what your doctor is recommending, or give you a difficult plan.
I would want to know why he/she is recommending chemo. Did you have an Onco Type score over 25? Were your bio markers TNBC or Her2+? Since standard of care is chemo for these situations, your doctor would be neglectful by not recommending chemo.
I work as a nurse in a breast cancer clinic. The doctor I work with is very aggressive in treating breast cancer. He offers his best recommendation, give the percentages of recurrence, the consequence of it becoming metastatic, and then he respects the patient’s decision. He continues to provide care, and is kind and respectful.
I have seen a lot of patients decline chemo, and become metastatic, and it makes me really sad, but I respect a person’s choice to make their own decisions.
If you decide to decline chemo, you may want to change doctors. You need to trust your doctor and feel safe and supported.
Wishing you well!
