Has Anyone Done Hypo-fractionated Radiation?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Story City, IA

I had a consult call with Mayo Rad Onc today. I had a lumpectomy 03-12-2024 no node involvement, 1.2 cm, HER2 +, Hormone receptor negative. Chemo of Taxol (weekly for 12 weeks) and HER2 blocker- Herceptin (1 year).

The recommendation is Hypo-fractionated whole breast radiation treatment for 5 days. This sounds great but has anyone experienced a down side?

I brought this up with my radiation oncologist and he knew about the study.
But he insisted on a 21 day radiation schedule 2/01/23-3/01/23.

JeanTaber From my understanding it is given in higher dosages but over a shorter period of time. The cumulative radiation is less. The side effects are similar, again over a shorter period of time. Also, not the added burden of being at a radiation center 5 days/ week for 3-5 weeks. The original study was done in England called the Fast Start Radiation Study. Also, this explains it pretty well. https://ascopubs.org/doi/10.1200/JCO.19.02750
