Deciding between breast reconstruction and going flat after a mastectomy is a personal choice that depends on several factors, including your health, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Here are some points to consider:

1. **Breast Reconstruction:**
- **Types**: You can choose between implant reconstruction or autologous (tissue) reconstruction. Implant reconstruction uses silicone or saline implants, while autologous reconstruction uses tissue from another part of your body.
- **Timing**: Reconstruction can be immediate (during your mastectomy) or delayed (after you have healed from mastectomy and any other treatments).
- **Benefits**: Reconstruction can help restore the appearance of breasts and potentially boost self-esteem and body image.
- **Considerations**: Think about the additional surgeries required, recovery time, and the potential impact of any future treatments like radiation.

2. **Going Flat (Opting for No Reconstruction):**
- **Simplicity**: This option avoids the need for further surgeries and the associated recovery times.
- **Prosthesis Option**: You can choose to wear a breast prosthesis that fits inside your bra, offering flexibility with appearance without surgery.
- **Self-Acceptance**: Many find confidence and comfort in embracing their body's changes post-mastectomy.

It's important to discuss these options thoroughly with your healthcare provider, considering your overall health, the specifics of your breast cancer, and your personal feelings. I’m a month out from getting my permanent implant, so far so good. My nipple could not be spared but other than that, once the scar has healed it’s going to look pretty good!

I had double mastectomy with nipple sparing reconstruction using DIEP flap 4.5 months ago - I’m very happy with my decision and love the result! Wish you luck with your “journey”🙏❤️

I had a double mastectomy and chose to go flat. It was the best decision for me. Recovery wasn’t bad at all. Honestly, for me, the drainage tubes were the worst part!
Weigh all of your options so when you meet with the surgeon you ask questions. I knew what I wanted at our first appointment.
