Have Any Of You Developed Memory Issues After Taxotere And HRT?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Wildomar, CA

I had Taxotere from 8/22 to 11/22, along with Herceptin and Perjeta infusions until 10/23. I have been on Arimidex from 1/23 to current, which has kept the receptors at around 16. I now am having memory issues and with my speech. Has anyone experienced this after either from Chemo or HRT? This is not only frustrating but scary! Thanks for any and all feedback🙏💖

Yes Jackie10. Letroxole (an estrogen blocker) does that to me. I have never had chemo so I know it's not that. I have memory recall issues, can't remember words, lack of concentration, etc. I agree that it is both annoying and scary. I think I get most frustrated when I am trying to do something and by the time I finish what I was doing I have forgotten what I was going to do next. I am pretty good at asking for words from other people when I lose one in the middle of a sentence. I just hope it doesn't make me sound too stupid.
I have always been a scheduler but now I use my calendar to keep notes on phone calls as well. I have also incorporated a bunch of other organizational tools that are on my phone to help keep myself less frustrated and try to make up for what the meds have deprived me of.

Memory issues, often referred to as "chemo brain," can occur after treatments like Taxotere (docetaxel), which is a type of chemotherapy. Chemo brain is characterized by memory loss and difficulty concentrating. It is more common with certain types of chemotherapy, including drugs like fluorouracil, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin. While Taxotere is not explicitly mentioned in the context for causing chemo brain, it is similar to other chemotherapies that do. Symptoms of chemo brain can resolve within nine months to a year after stopping chemotherapy, but about 10 percent to 20 percent of people may experience long-term effects. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is generally not recommended for those with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer due to the risk of cancer growth, so it's important to discuss all symptoms and treatment options with your healthcare provider.

Hi Nancy, thanks for letting me know how you're doing after going off Tamoxifen. Did you start on anything else?

I had those issues on tamoxifen. I have been off it for 2 months. The cognitive issues are much improved.

Thanks Joyce, it does make me feel better that others have gone through this most frustrating side effect. I do find that I have to put everything on my calendar. It's going to take some time to getting used to using the notes, but a great idea!

Did you get any mental behavior therapy to help dealing this process? If so, did you find it helpful?

It does not make you sound stupid at all. We are only acknowledging another one of the very real side effects that we're having to navigate our way through. I just feel like very inadequate with tasks. Does this get better? Thanks so much for sharing on how you're adapting with what the meds have deprived us from. However, I don't want to sound ungrateful and I am thankful for each new day🤗
