Is Radiation Really A Necessary Treatment For Breast Cancer After Mastectomy?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Melbourne, FL

I was notefied from the Radiation Staff that my Insurence is only covering about 2000 Dollars and the rest,3000 Dollars is my responsibility.I don't habe that kind of money. So I am thinking of skipping Radiation altogether and just go on Hormone Blockers. Can somebody give me good advice?

I am so sorry what you are going through I lived in Italy and healthcare was socialized medicine. Perhaps you can qualify for some charitable foundations. It is crucial to have the radiation if there is a chance that the cancer can come back or "seed" after surgery spread (Tiny cells need to be eliminated. I know that many of the drugs for Cancer are expensive, I called and asked about the safety net programs where drugs are minimal copay or actually free, you may be able to save money this way. I had to pay my first 7,000 this year and TX oncology had a sign that I had to see a financial counselor on 1/2 this year and pay or my treatments would STOP. I had to charge 2,500 dollars. I was terrified to have my treatment stopped. I later found out that there are charities that will cover some of the expenses. Check with the social worker in the office. I am so sorry for your stress. I have walked in your shoes and have to work almost full time hours to "pay for my Cancer treatment."

Erika, I went on a payment plan because my insurance only paid 14% of my radiation treatments. Im sure they will work with you.

Erika, you could still go to Germany and even without insurance, it would be cheaper.
On a more serious note, I believe they do radiation after mastectomy if you have positive nodes. If not, normally it’s not necessary. I don’t remember if you had those positive or not, but that’s the difference I believe.

Yes, yesterday I gave the lady, from Finances,my Credit Card and she took 1452.50 from my Bank and then she told me that I have to pay 242.00 Dollars, each Month for six months, even so I only get 7 weeks of treatments. I am besides my selves, because I am on Social Security and have Homeowners Insurance and Car Insurance coming up,in July, plus about 2000 Dollars of Property Taxes. I think I have to get a loan?! Which makes me very upset. I grew up in Germany,if I had known ahead of time, what can happen I would have stayed, because in Germany your Insurance is covering everything from Birth to Dead. Our Health is not that important to the Government!
