The Day Has Finally Come. Tomorrow I See The Oncologist About Getting The Radiation Started. I Have A Lot Of Questions. Any Suggestions?

I thought that I would ask anyone who has had radiation what they think the most important questions are to ask.

I agree with Karen. Radiation is easy, quick, and not painful while being treated. The worst part is having to go every day. It took me much longer to drive there, change clothes, and get into a gown than the actual treatment took.

Ask about deodorant use during radiation weeks. Also ask about timing of creams/lotions they give you. My radiation oncologist did not want me to apply anything for a certain time (hour or so) prior to the radiation session. Also if lymph nodes near the neck will receive radiation, you may get a "sore throat" feeling - difficult to swallow. So verify where you will receive radiation.

The most important thing I would add is ask how to protect yourself from radiation "burns". And start using what they recommend right away. Don't wait until you have a sunburn or rash to start. Many suggest Aquaphor ointment but there are others.

What type of radiation?
How long will it last?
Side effects, both physical and mental?
Will I be able to cover the breast not being radiated?

It's great that you're preparing for your oncology appointment. Here are some suggestions based on the knowledge base:

1. Prepare a List of Questions
- What type of breast cancer do I have, and what stage is it?
- Has it metastasized (spread) to other parts of my body?
- What’s my prognosis (outlook)?

It's great that you're preparing for your oncology appointment. Here are some suggestions based on the knowledge base:

1. Prepare a List of Questions:
- What type of breast cancer do I have, and what stage is it?
- Has it metastasized (spread) to other parts of my body?
- What’s my prognosis (outlook)?
- What treatment options do I have?
- What are the benefits and risks of each option, including side effects?
- Should I consider joining a clinical trial?
- What comes next?
- Where can I find more information about my diagnosis or treatment options?
- Are there any support services or resources available for me?

2. Bring Your Medical Records:
- Ensure you have your most up-to-date medical information, reports, and any other materials the oncologist may need.

3. Review Insurance Coverage:
- Check your insurance coverage in advance to understand what will be covered and what you may need to pay out of pocket.

4. Bring Packaging for Medications and Supplements:
- Your oncologist will want to know which prescription and over-the-counter medications, herbal remedies, and nutritional supplements you’re currently taking and at what doses.

5. Consider Bringing a Friend or Loved One:
- They can provide moral and emotional support, help report symptoms, and assist with logistics.

6. Bring Extra Paper and Writing Implements:
- To take notes during the appointment. Alternatively, ask if you can make an audio recording of the appointment with your smartphone or tablet.

7. Have an Open Mind and a Positive Outlook:
- Working through your feelings can help you feel more grounded and positive. Consider practicing relaxation techniques like mindful meditation or calming breathing exercises before the appointment.

Good luck with your appointment!
