Did You Have DIEP Flap Reconstructive Surgery Or Implants?
My oncologist recommended DIEP flap over implants. I have researched both and would love to hear from anyone who has had either of these. I am looking for real information about how things went. The plastic surgeons tell me it is a process, but I am looking for women who haev gone through it. I am curious if

I had a double mastectomy 8/2022 with plastic surgeon and breast surgeon working together and expanders placed during the mastectomy. I am a teacher and I went back to work after 2 weeks but it was the teacher workdays at the beginning of the year. I had a week to adjust to working, then the kids returned and I did fine.
Like Ilene3, my fills went well - tightness feeling only. My appointments were after school, took only a few minutes to do, then back home. I took some ibuprofen as a precaution. Went back to work the next day after each one.
After fills were complete, I had 31 rounds of radiation NovDec 2022 over my whole chest. Expanders replaced with implants May 2023. I have not had any major issues. 61 years old. Satisfied with my results. In a typical day, I rarely think about my implants being there. I don't have any pain or discomfort.
There are lots of things to consider. The tissue/flap choices I believe feel more like real breasts and you are more likely to have feeling over your whole breast. At my age, that was not a big deal for me. I was going to lose my nipples in all scenarios. I have been married 39 years and my husband and I discussed the options and agreed on the implant route. I was a DD prior to the double mastectomy and am now a small C with my implants. My goal was to look ¨normal¨ in clothes as I am a teacher in a small school. In clothes, I actually like the way I look better. My shoulders feel better and the bra divots in my shoulders are almost gone now. For me, implants were the right decision.
Are you considering DIEP flap breast reconstruction surgery? This procedure uses your own tissue to create new breast mounds after a mastectomy. It offers benefits like a more natural look, relatively easy recovery, and more sensation in the new tissue. Consult with your doctor to see if you're a good candidate and to Show Full Answer
