Hi! Appreciate Experiences With Accelerated Partial Breast Irridation. Any Suggestions On Minimizing Side Effects?
Each Radiation Team will make a recommendation of what cream or lotion they would like you to use. My team told me to use whatever I wanted. The big thing was to USE the CREAM DAILY. I used it 2X a day and I continue to use it. My Radiation Oncologist was specific to say, continue to use the cream/lotion for at least a year after radiation is completed as the skin will continue to change. I actually use a coconut cream from The Dollar Store. I like it and it works! If I had any itches used the hydrocortisone cream and also used the coconut oil on my skin as well. I had a slight burn and need the lidocaine ointment. Also used the "Soothies" on my nipple when irritated which are found in the baby/nursing mother section of Target or Walmart.
I had APBI and there will be minimal side effects. I used Aquaphor to prevent any sunburn but with only 5 treatments, that shouldn't be a big problem. I did have some fatigue that lasted for a couple of weeks after I finished. You will be happy that you were able to do APBI.
Thank you for your response. Seems it went quite well for you.
Can you share the moisturizer?
I was told to put on the moisturizer morning and night twice a day, but I’ve heard others have used it more than twice a day.
Hi, @A MyBCTeam Member
So far, I have a bit of puckering look to my nipple area when I flex which the Radiation Oncologist said is from the radiation. I do not notice it until I flex my muscles. My skin looks normal. My incisions really are not noticeable. The one around my nipple is not noticeable at all and the one under my arm is in a skin fold. I do notice that if I do not do my daily stretches that I do get tight. So, I must do daily range of motion (ROM) and stretching to keep that arm and shoulder moving. Still putting on coconut cream/oil daily as well, so, no other external noted effects.
Thank you!
