Parital Breast Radiation....5 Or 16 Sessions?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm DCIS grade 1 with DCISionRT score of 4.7 (with 3.0-10.0 Elevated). Originally thought I was having 5 radiaiton sessions but Doctor has now suggested 16 sessions thinking there would be fewer side effects. Not sure I agree with this thinking. Thanks for any info thoughts you can share.

I was also told I would qualify for 5 sessions of Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation. Still, when I came for my first session they told me that because I lost more than 25% of my breast during the lumpectomy I no longer qualified for the 5 sessions, and would need 16. So far I am only experiencing low-level fatigue and some swelling of the affected breast. I was told that the side effects would be more likely with 16 sessions because there is more frequent exposure. I am using a prescribed steroid cream and Aquafor 2x per day. I was very upset when I found out I had to have 16 sessions but I am going every day and just counting down until I am finished.

This can translate to approximately 5 to 16 sessions, depending on the specific treatment plan and frequency of sessions per day. Always consult with your radiation oncologist for a Show Full Answer
