Gabapentinoids Tied To Hip Fractures In Older Adults — Risk Of Hip Fracture Was High In People With Frailty Or Chronic Kidney Disease
MedPage Today
Key Takeaways
Gabapentinoids -- pregabalin and gabapentin -- were tied to increased hip fracture risk in older adults.
Risks were high for people with chronic kidney disease or significant frailty.
Odds of hip fracture remained high after adjusting for other central nervous system medications.
Gabapentinoids -- gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica) -- were tied to an increased risk of hip fracture in older adults.

With my oncologist permission I just finished weaning myself off gabapentin. I thought it was doing nothing for my chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy. Now I'm 100% off and don't feel any more pain. And am particularly glad I made that decision after reading this article. Thank you, @A MyBCTeam Member
Tell you the truth I really don't want more meds added. I'm happy with the two that I currently take letrozole and atrovastatin and my vitamin d3 supplement and an occasional tylenol or asprin. I think we need less meds and more love and hugs.
Let me take a stab at it. This is more of a research and quality improvement focus. the CI stands for "Confidence Interval" here is a narrative for that.
A confidence interval (CI) is a range of values that’s likely to include a population value with a certain degree of confidence. It is often expressed as a percentage, such as 95%, which means that there is a 95% chance that the true population value lies within the interval. A CI is calculated using a formula that involves the sample mean, the population standard deviation, the sample size, and the Z-value from the normal standard distribution.
So, basically what the article is saying is that there is a high chance that the two are related.
Does this help?
Concerning... I wonder if it is dose-related. (I'm on a low dose.)
Sounded to me like it's a coincidence. Survey says, Oh look a percentage of people needing a new hip are on Gabapentin. I was put on it for herniated disks in 2016. Weaned myself down to 600mg BID after having expressive aphasia, a crazy appetite and gained ~ 30 lb, plus memory issues @ age of 50. After 1 year of taking it I spoke to my PCP and mentioned the above. His reply was "Yes."...that was it. When weaning off , keep in mind to go slow. This is an anti seizure med that changes the brain chemistry. The rule is, the longer you have been on it, the slower the taper should be. Many Dr.'s that prescribe this crap don't know this. Quite scary !!! PS they check your kidney function because of the chemo meds.
