I live in Las Vegas and in September (when I had my bilateral mastectomy) its still pretty hot here. I had an ace bandage wrap and wore loose, light pj's. Even though its hot outside the a/c can make you feel chilly. Before surgery i went and got some really soft hoodies and wore them inside out around the house. Voila! Instant drain pockets i also lived in yoga pants and eventually tied a shoestring around my neck and attached the drains to that. You gotta remember my dr nicknamed me "Juicy". Those saucers got full and heavy and the shoestring helped with the weight of them. I had colored shoestrings and matched them to my wardrobe! LOL. Made taking a shower a cinch.

I went home with the ugliest bra I have every seen. I asked my PS who put this on me and she laughed and said she did? I wore older tank tops over it and pinned my drains to it. Then I threw the shirts away afterwards.

I woke up in recovery with my post-op bra on and was told to wear it until told otherwise. It had little hooks to attach the drain. Simply wore a very baggy shirt home from the hospital. You will be surprised how easily the drains can be concealed under clothing.

Bantry, fear not! The surgery itself surprised me. It wasn't anything like I expected. It was not as painful, just mildly painful, & they'll give you medication if needed. The bra that you will wear is a special bra for after the surgery that has loops on it for your drain pouches. You should ask your oncologist on their nurses about it or the surgeon/nurses. Someone gave me one & it was very handy. The drains are no big deal, just a bit of an inconvenience. When you empty them, you will start at the top of the tube squeezing tightly & proceed downward. I wish I could show you. It's really not hard. Just don't forget to check them periodically. The drains won't last too long & you'll be proud of how well you will manage it. When I came home from the hospital, I called a friend in nursing school & had her come over so I could show her everything & how it worked. She brought her teenage daughter, who I also explained it all to. You never know, it might inspire her to be a doctor someday. I was amazed by the whole process & that it was not terrible like some of my other surgeries had been. In fact, I decided it was the best surgery I've had, so just get ready, go in, & know that you can handle it. No need to fear. If you aren't a Christian, you might want to think about God because God is who carried me through Stage 4 cancer & eventually healed me of it. I wasn't supposed to live. I will be praying for you, hon! Keep your chin up & know that you are not alone!! :D
